Cloud Computing Should be Government Priority - Experts

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributor

Government can reduce expenses in information technology segment by using cloud computing technologies, according to experts.“Nowadays, resorting to cloud computing is not an option but it has become a necessity as it helps significantly reduce spending on IT,” said Nabeel Fayoumi, general manager at National Information Technology Centre (NITC), in a statement.

Cloud computing uses Internet and central remote servers to maintain data and applications. It allows consumers and businesses to use applications without installation and access their files at any computer with Internet access. Speaking at a meeting, “Cloud Computing, Future Trends,” Fayoumi said the government is focusing on the de-centralization of computing and IT-related issues.

“In Jordan, there has been huge spending on technology with no clear return,” Fayoumi said. “Although the spending on technology was immense, but we have not witnessed a tangible positive impact over the past years.”

“The whole world is resorting to cloud computing with many countries across the world started to create major data centers to serve their organizations,” Fayoumi said. In 2010, the NITC announced plans to create a datacenter that serves all public entities this year.“There is a huge potential for the use of cloud computing in the public sector. It helps government establishments save more money,” said Tareq Abu Sharar, CEO of INTRACOM IT Services Middle East and Africa.

The meeting was organized by INTRACOM in association with EMC Corporation. Participants, who included IT experts from the public, private and security bodies sectors, focused on the importance of cloud computing as it reduces costs for maintenance of equipment.

While cloud services are gaining popularity and analysts are predicting growth, security remains as the biggest concern for IT professionals. Future growth of cloud computing will depend on this factor as evident from a recent survey conducted by PhoneFactor (News - Alert).
