When the Winds Start to Blow, Don't Be Left in the Dark

On a cool, fall day, there is nothing more relaxing than writing by the fireplace in my great room at home. Living on 12 acres outside of a larger metropolitan area means we have quiet, beautiful trees and wind. The 12 acres peaks in the middle and our house sits at the top. When the wind gets howling, there’s little that will stand still. For this reason, I can only buy wrought iron furniture and the grill always needs to be standing against the house. Anything else and I run the risk of losing it into the field next door or taking flight.

That’s right, we’ve seen trampolines take flight and land in the trees, flip over the house and wrap themselves around light poles. The latter is the most damaging as it can cause power interruptions and much worse. The best form of power protection we put in place was to build a garage to block the wind and get rid of the protective netting around the trampoline. Eventually, it was the final removal of the trampoline.

The point is, the wind can blow like crazy and do very little but inconvenience those of us who are out in it. When the wind picks up everyday objects and sends them flying, the result is much more than a little inconvenience. In North Hills, Los Angeles, the wind was gusting up to 50 mph, creating what is known to locals as a Santa Ana wind event. The gusts are strong enough to pull up trees and send them crashing into homes and cars. The wind can also knock out power.

Throughout the city, roughly 11,000 customers were without power as the wind advisory continued. Those affected had little warning, other than the high winds, which may or may not cause a problem with the power connection. This outage points to the importance of power protection and how easily we can lose access to the grid. If you’re working on an important project or processes are underway that support your business, the loss of power could be devastating.

For that reason, Minuteman continues to provide power protection devices to the market at large, ensuring users have access to the devices they need to stay connected to power, no matter the circumstances. Whether the application helps to save data before power is lost or delivers battery backup access, the point is to keep you connected as long as possible before full power is lost. In doing so, you have time to make the necessary arrangements until the power comes back on.

While you may not know when the next power outage will occur, Minuteman can help you be ready to keep working when it does.
