As Long as There Are Squirrels, You Need Power Protection

As an avid fan of Chevy Chase and all of his Vacation movies, I can’t help but call out certain lines when appropriate and the mood fits. When driving down the road and a squirrel enters my path, it’s common to hear the famous, “Sqquuirrrrel!” from Christmas Vacation. If you’re unfamiliar, it’s a callback to the scene where the Griswolds and guests run panicked throughout the house as the rodent made its appearance from inside the replacement Christmas tree.

In my own experience, I’m simply waiting for the squirrel to make the wrong move and run under my tire instead of to the other side of the road and safety. The rodents tend to be unpredictable and can wreak more havoc than their size would suggest. In fact, citizens in Topeka, Kansas, recently lost power thanks to a squirrel either walking on the power line or a transformer, according to Westar Energy spokeswoman Gina Penzig.

The unpredictability of rodents, weather and even the power company itself is enough of an argument to investment in power protection. In this case, I don’t just mean battery backup, but a strategy to ensure that when you lose power, you don’t lose everything you’re working on. For the business environment, this is essential. It not only protects the device you’re using, but also the work you’ve completed, as well as important data you’re collecting. If it needs power to run, it needs power protection.

For Topeka, that means that without power protection, nearly 3,000 customers were affected. Power was restored to these individuals after 40 minutes, but that doesn’t address what could have been lost in that timeframe. And while companies like Westar Energy do install wildlife protection equipment to try to prevent outages due to interaction with wildlife, not all incidents are completely preventable. As such, it’s important that customers take their own precautions to prevent the loss of information, data and other resources when power is lost.

Minuteman has long been in the business of providing power protection. In fact, the company’s uninterruptible power supply (UPS) devices provide the battery backup needed to protect your device and your information should a loss in power occur. Plus, the devices also work to prevent the loss of information when a power outage is the reality. This demonstrates that the company understands the importance of power protection on a broader scale – it’s not just about ensuring you have power; it’s also about ensuring your access to power and data isn’t interrupted.

While Chevy Chase’s squirrel wound up meeting Julia Louis-Dreyfus at the door, there’s no news on what happened to the Topeka squirrel. Chances are, he’s still busy collecting nuts and perhaps looking for a new path to roam.
