McAfee Believes NYSE, United, Wall Street Journal Came Under Attack

On the recent fateful day when the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), United Airlines and The Wall Street Journal all had pretty severe technical glitches, there were plenty of people who wondered whether it was really the coincidence all three entities claimed. At least one cyber-security firm, McAfee (News - Alert), has not only questioned whether or not this was a coincidence but claimed that this was actually a hacking.

John McAfee, who admittedly has a bit of a problem when it comes to his reputation these days, refuted the claims that the NYSE in particular could not detect any kind of a problem with hackers. According to the Coin Telegraph he basically pointed to the fact that the way everything went down, there was no way the NYSE could confirm or deny hacker involvement in the heat of the moment.

“To determine whether a system as large as the one used by the NYSE has been hacked or not, cannot possibly be determined in a matter of hours,” McAfee said in an article he wrote on SiliconANGLE about the situation. “Every programmer, every systems engineer and every employee of an IT department in the world understands this well.” In order to back up his claims, he pointed to an attack that was going on against the U.S. Office of Personnel Management for more than a year before anyone caught wind of it.

The problem is that if this was a hacking, no one is taking credit. That alone seems to throw a monkey wrench into any theories about an attack. The group “Anonymous” made some vague allusions to the NYSE having problems, but no one from that group is stepping forward, and they almost always do. So for now, we have just allegations from McAfee and claims from the NYSE, United Airlines and The Wall Street Journal that they think everything was a coincidence. What we also have is yet another reminder that keeping data safe, even if your company isn’t the size of the NYSE, is vitally important.

Making sure you records are secure when you are being hacked, or just when you lose power is of the utmost importance in the digital age. When you encounter an issue like a sudden loss of power, there are solutions like those from Minuteman that will step in and make sure you have what you need to keep working without a loss or corruption of data. When you’re talking about hackers, there simply isn’t a one size fits all fix. This is why firms need to stay on their toes.
