The same state with the worst drought in decades has been hit hard with rain. California residents are facing an interesting mix of challenges, from limits on the amount of water they can use to the loss of power in the wake of powerful storms. When the electricity goes out, residents and companies alike are left in the lurch. Those with the right power protection had the best hope of recovery.

Last week’s storm left citizens in Northern California without power. Roughly 100,000 homes and businesses experienced a loss in power at some point on Thursday, while a number of parks and roads were closed. Those traveling were left without many options as more than 200 flights were also canceled. While a number of locations have gotten their power turned back on, more than 66,000 PG&E (News - Alert) customers were still in the dark into late Thursday afternoon.

Powerful storms aren’t always easy to predict, especially when they pack just the right punch to knock out your power. When this happens, a number of key systems stop, unless you have the right backup power in place. Robust power protection platforms can keep you online for a while, but even these options have their limits. They key is to have your contingency plan in place and follow the steps you’ve outlined for sustainability.

While some may not view a simple power outage as a catastrophic instance, others may be quick to disagree. The latter are likely those who rely heavily on power sources to conduct business. The data center, for instance, can hardly afford for a power outage. When planned correctly, however, that data center will be designed with power protection in place so that data is saved before the power resources are spent.

This last point is key to successful power protection. While it is important to protect your key assets from power surges, the data you could lose in a loss of power instance could cost you much more than the server it rests on. Power protection from Minuteman is designed to ensure you have the time necessary to save the data in question before a loss of power sets in, allowing you to protect that data and your business.

Regardless of the threats that exist in your industry, a loss of power is a very real one for all industries. Take the necessary steps to ensure you have the power protection you need before you need it. In doing so, you can focus on maintaining business processes, even if you have to do so by flashlight.
