The Consequences of Power Failure and Importance of Disaster Preparedness

Late last week, breaking news from NBC San Diego reported that a “massive, 500-year-old oak tree unexpectedly split in half and toppled into a private roadway in Fallbrook. The incident happened around 6:35 a.m. on San Jacinto Terrace. As the tree fell, it [brought] power lines down with it,” according to NBC 7's Elena Gomez report on the news company’s website. There, a video of the scene is available to viewers.

Luckily, no residents walking the path where the enormous old oak tree—that stood 150 feet across at its widest spread and was five centuries years old—fell, were hurt. However, it did drop into a yard and private roadway and took down power lines. As a result, it “left approximately 137 [residents] without power in portions of surrounding areas, including South Fallbrook, Bonsall and San Luis Rey Height,” said San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E), a utility that provides natural gas and electricity to San Diego County and southern Orange (News - Alert) County in southwestern California. Power was not fully restored until about 3 p.m. Friday the 21st. A tree company was called to clean up the mess, and SDG&E worked to restore power to those who live in the neighborhood; one may now reflect on the importance of disaster-preparedness plans.

Surviving unimaginable disasters, whether natural or technological, requires planning today, and such preparedness is crucial. For example, to prevent potential power failures and/or outages, all measures need to be put in place in advance, not after a disruptive incident.

People depend on power, and no place is exempt from power-related problems. Power failures can lead to outages at a home, facility, and/or business infrastructure that could be paralyzed for a length of time.

When the power fails, a complete power protection system can help preserve service and protect critical connections to ensure systems will keep running during a disaster. Minuteman UPS/Para Systems (News - Alert), for instance, “has a solution that will keep the operation on its feet during the worst of climate situations.”

It is never too late to have a power protection plan in place for services running across virtual and physical platforms. Investing in reliable power protection products and solutions, like those offered by Minuteman, is essential to reduce or even eliminate downtime due to outages. The company offers, in fact, power protection products ranging from external battery packs to different types of UPSs (Standby, Line-interactive, and Online) and rack mounts Power Distribution Units (PDUs), including the RPM (Remote Power Manager) family series of products (an IP-addressable PDU used for business continuity). All these product are essential to support a facility, as they are apt standby power systems that can reload and restore key systems in case of an emergency, during the loss of utility power or in case of a generator failure.

In sum, it is important, especially for businesses, to analyze their recovery efforts to mitigate post-disaster risks and, perhaps, invest in reliable power protection products and solutions. Choosing the right provider is important to deal with any power issues that crop up unexpectedly. Using systems like those offered by Minuteman can be a solution to help maintain a constant supply of power and ensure continuity of operations even in the event of a disaster, natural or man-made.

Generally, people are unable to anticipate the potential magnitude of such an event, and the likelihood of each event, let alone estimate a potential downtime. Yet, conducting an environment assessment, that measures the likelihood of a hazardous event with the probable degree of damage that would result, is an initiative that can expedite recovery of part or all of a business's resources when disaster does strike.
