Remote power management systems are an important element in ensuring efficient and effective network operation, seeing how administrators can remotely correct any problem conveniently at any time.

Additionally, they can solve equipment lock-ups and lessen the negatives associated with downtime.  Using RPMs, locked-up devices can be re-set from a PC or laptop, and even from a smartphone or tablet.

A recent white paper from Minuteman UPS/Para Systems (News - Alert) called “Saving Time & Money with Remote Power Management,” explains how downtime leads to lost revenue and other drawbacks; in fact, over $26.5 billion in revenue is lost annually from downtime, according to CA (News - Alert) Technologies.

Out of 200 companies surveyed, small businesses lost an average of $55,000 in revenue, mid-sized companies lost more than $91,000 and large companies lost more than $1,000,000.

It’s just not money at risk but also reputation, employee morale and customer loyalty, the study added.

Most enterprises use uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) to keep equipment operational, but UPSs can’t power cycle on an individual power outlet.

Conversely, RPM solutions can immediately cycle power or reboot a device without interrupting the equipment attached to the UPS. Remote Power Managers can shut down servers and also provide remote equipment monitoring to ensure devices are running correctly – not to mention it can provide power sequencing.

Remote power management solutions ultimately let network administrators remotely power cycle servers and devices, as well troubleshoot problems, from virtually anywhere. In fact, the newest Minuteman RPMs lets an administrator control up to 16 connected devices.

In a related matter, the UPS sector is offering value-added services, such as power quality audit, thermograph surveys and remote monitoring services, according to a report from Computer Reseller News (CRN).

“Remote monitoring is the most popular facility being adopted by DCs,” Haresh Gada, director, Network Techlab, Mumbai, told CRN. “It is in demand from enterprises and mid-market customers.”

UPSs feature communication devices for remote monitoring, as well. “They offer daily status reports on power loads, humidity and temperature, as well as fire alarms, remote shut-downs and SMS notifications,” Ankesh Kumar, director, Channel Products & Marketing, Emerson (News - Alert) Network Power, added in a statement to CRN.
