If you want to know what should be on every data center manager’s Santa wish list this holiday season, it is an uninterruptible power supply (UPS), adorned in all its power protection festiveness.

Over the past few years, UPSs have moved from being viewed as ugly pieces of plant room equipment to intrinsic units that can help ensure uptime. According to a recent DatacenterDynamics piece, the role of the UPS today is to become an “indispensable resource for the protection of critical appliances.” UPSs today are touted for their reliability, efficiency, cost effectiveness and flexibility.

Earlier this fall, experts predicted that the global UPS market will grow by $1 billion in 2011, as compared to last year. Pike Research (News - Alert) expects the market to expand from $7.2 billion in 2010 to $8.2 billion in 2011 – growing by 12.2 percent, according to a recent DatacenterDynamics story.

Those sentiments seem to be echoed in the recent a recent survey conducted by Uninterruptible Power Supplies Limited.

In that survey, it was found that one of the main reasons UPSs have surged in popularity is that electrical mains power has become less reliable, or at least it is viewed that way. In fact, more than 75 percent of the 2000 IT professionals surveyed stated that their UPS system was called upon to protect critical equipment during a power outage within the last 12 months. Moreover, 78 percent stated that they also believed the situation would only get worse over the next decade.

Other highlights of the survey include the fact that: more than 63 percent regard reducing overall operating costs as their main driver to reduce power consumption, compared to just 27 percent which are driven by a desire to reduce their organization’s carbon footprint; 82 percent of respondents feel that energy efficiency is a key consideration when buying capital equipment; and nearly 54 percent of respondents stated that modern UPS systems have significantly improved power consumption and cooling issues within their organization.

One company that remains strong in its commitment to provider leading UPS units is Minuteman UPS/Para Systems (News - Alert), a leading provider of power protection technologies. Minuteman offers a line of UPSs for computers, servers, peripherals, voice and data communication systems, security systems and other mission-critical equipment. Its UPS family of products includes the Online UPS Systems, the Line Interactive UPS System, the Standby UPS Systems, and the Legacy UPS Products.

As part of its commitment to producing leading power protection technologies, a few months ago Minuteman unveiled the Minuteman PRO-LCD series, a new line of UPSs designed to safeguard medium-sized telephone, security and server systems from power anomalies. The PRO-LCD is the next generation of Minuteman’s highly successful PRO Series of UPSs.

“The PRO Series of UPSs has been our most popular since its introduction in 1997, and over the years since then we have made efforts to ensure that it stays current with the demands of our customers,” Duston Nixon, marketing communications specialist for power protection provider Minuteman, told TMCnet as to why Minuteman has decided to offer the PRO-LCD series. “This began with the PRO-E, the first update to the series, and now the evolution continues with the PRO-LCD.
