What does disaster preparedness mean to you? With hurricane season still upon us, not to mention what is being predicted as a grueling winter ahead, homes and businesses should seriously consider having a plan in place and putting that plan into action. There are several resources available that offer some good checklists when it comes to making a plan that works for you; the issue has several folds, including medical and safety, keeping family and pets in check, and for businesses, ensuring a power backup plan in the event of an extended outage.

The National Research Council says that the nation is in need of some serious strategy planning to protect our grids. We can learn a lesson from Super Storm Sandy just a few years back: an estimated $25,000,000,000 (That’s 25 BILLION) in lost business activity was accounted for. We need to look at the bigger picture in terms of disaster preparedness, including disaster in all of its forms. Having said that, the U.S. electric system as it stands is all too vulnerable, and the economic impact, not to mention the safety concerns of power protection, are too important to ignore.

As Daily Progress points out, disaster preparedness means taking action before first responders do, at least in terms of having a plan. On the residential side of things, this means having the necessary tools on hand, like candles, batteries, flashlights and non-perishable food. But what about businesses?

Businesses shouldn’t wait for a disaster to happen to start caring about power protection. In addition to regular system backups, companies should seek uninterruptable power supplies (UPS) devices to provide emergency power when power fails. The most obvious advantage of an uninterruptible power supply is, of course, the maintenance of power.

Aside from maintaining power when necessary, UPS prevents data loss and offers surge protection. The UPS automatically switches to AC generated battery power, preventing the spike or surge from harming whatever is connected to it. A UPS also prevents power fluctuations.

Minuteman is a provider of power protection products from Para Systems (News - Alert), including UPSs, surge suppressors and PDUs. Using power protection equipment can save institutions thousands in costly damages due to outages, and allows businesses to keep their data safe and secure so that when power is restored, all is not lost.
