Texas Storm Leaves Many in the Dark

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

Summertime, while usually meant for beach-going and barbeques, sometimes comes with some unpleasant instances that can put a damper on your day. With summer also come some pretty hefty storms that can easily knock a power grid out of commission, leaving several, if not thousands, without power.

Such was the case in Gilmer, Texas, where a recent thunderstorm hit thousands of area meters, leaving many without power. According to the Gilmer Mirror, the storm took down many trees and lines, and restoring power depended on how much damage was actually done. With trees falling on houses, connectivity was going to take longer than usual.

While this is just one case of a power outage, it is important to remember that power can go out anywhere, anytime, and outage times can be longer than a few hours.

Consider one of the greatest power outages to hit the North American continent; remember the one in 2003 that caused power outages across the Northeastern United States as well as much of Southwestern Canada? That power outage lasted for days, and resulted in the loss of billions of dollars for small businesses.

This is a big problem, and one that can easily be solved through the use of backup power supplies.

There are two primary types of backup power for computers. The first is a generator which will actually generate backup power for you. This mean that no matter how long the power is out, you will constantly be having new power generated to operate your business. The other type of backup power supply is similar, but rather than actually generating power, this large battery will only hold power in reserve. The amount of power that this will give to your business depends upon the size of the backup battery. These systems are referred to as UPS systems.

Minuteman UPS/Para Systems (News - Alert) is a provider of unique and robust power protection solutions and offers an array of products, from outlet surge protectors to UPSs, all of which are designed to keep businesses going despite what’s going on outside.

What’s the lesson we can all learn from power outages? Don’t weather the storm without a backup plan, and plan to invest in equipment like a UPS that can help you stay connected until all is right with the world once more.
