When we talk about power protection, it usually involves a fail-safe solution to keep businesses up and running when the weather is to blame, or when utility companies are up against wildlife and other sources of power cuts. There are instances of power protection where none of these things are to blame except for the utility companies themselves; sometimes they need to cut power for maintenance reasons, and this further emphasizes the importance of investing in some sort of power protection solution, like an uninterruptible power supply (UPS).

Take for example Southern California’s Montebello, whose businesses were affected by a planned power outage from Southern California Edison (News - Alert) Co. in an effort to replace underground equipment. The planned outage, according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, took place during business hours and lasted the entire day, so much so that businesses in the area had to shut down.

What makes this situation exceptionally upsetting for merchants was that, despite communication from the utility company by way of postcards, most businesses were unaware of said outage and were quite literally left in the dark.

“The Edison shutdown has caused me a great deal of grief, I should say, not only the loss of income but also that 30 people are out of work for the day,” said Jeff Solowitz, owner of an area bakery, according to the Tribune.

A spokesperson for Edison was not sure why the merchants didn’t receive their notices.

Power protection systems are a must for keeping a steady power supply during power cuts, spikes, and surges, or, in the instance of Montebello, a planned outage. These systems provide much needed protection against health hazards and data loss and are necessary for maintaining key communications systems.

Solowitz said he was unable to fulfill the day’s orders due to lack of refrigeration and phone lines, thus costing his business revenue for the day.

This is where a UPS would have come in handy for the Solowitz and the other merchants of Montebello.

Aside from maintaining power when necessary, UPS prevents data loss and offers surge protection. The UPS automatically switches to AC generated battery power, preventing the spike or surge from harming whatever is connected to it. A UPS also prevents power fluctuations.

Minuteman UPS/Para Systems (News - Alert) is a provider of unique and robust power protection solutions and offers an array of products, from outlet surge protectors to UPSs. Using power protection equipment can save institutions thousands in costly damages due to outages as well as keep things running smoothly and efficiently in the event of an interruption or total outage, even the planned ones.
