There is something to be said of the winter weather as of late, particularly in the areas of the country where ice and snow are not normal occurrences. The more southern states have been ill-prepared for the wintry mix, so much so that many businesses have experienced outages, downtime and overall havoc.

Between Richmond and Columbia counties in Georgia alone, 85 percent have experienced power outages, mostly due to downed power lines and trees. These instances have put the area in critical condition, and local governments are stressing safety and disaster preparedness.

For businesses, this means hyper-focusing on keeping all systems “go”, despite what Mother Nature has been bringing. It also means not resting on one’s laurels when it comes to power protection. In addition to regular system backups, companies should seek uninterruptable power supply (UPS) devices to provide emergency power when power fails. The most obvious advantage of an uninterruptible power supply is, of course, the maintenance of power.

A UPS is an electrical piece of machinery that provides emergency power to a load when the input power source fails.

Thanks to Punxsutawney Phil, winter isn’t likely to be replaced by spring any time soon. We’re still in the thick of the snow and ice season, and with the milder temps still a while away, we’ve learned through this rather peculiar weather that being as prepared as much as possible is crucial to literally weathering the storm.

Aside from maintaining power when necessary, UPS prevents data loss and offers surge protection. The UPS automatically switches to AC generated battery power, preventing the spike or surge from harming whatever is connected to it. A UPS also prevents power fluctuations.

Minuteman UPS/Para Systems (News - Alert) is a provider of unique and robust power protection solutions and offers an array of products, from outlet surge protectors to UPSs, all of which are designed to keep businesses going despite what’s going on outside.

In addition to keeping things running smoothly, using power protection equipment can also save institutions thousands in costly damages due to outages in the event of an interruption or total outage. Downtime means lost revenue. Lost revenue means dealing with a whole slew of setbacks that can be difficult to recover from.

What’s the lesson we can all learn from this year’s winter weather? Don’t weather the storm without first investing in a solid backup plan.
