Weather technology provides considerable value in that it enables meteorologists to forecast storms and other threats that could knock out power or cause other productivity problems for a business. When the surge protector meant to keep the weather reporting computer online can’t take the heat, power protection goes right out the window.

A power surge was to blame for the damage to Canyon Lake weatherman Pat Elliano’s computer. The lack of proper power protection rendered his Verizon (News - Alert) FiOS box and surge protector useless, although the PC connected to the protector come out unscathed. Another PC Elliano uses for weather reporting was not so lucky.

In this case, the use of a power protector kept one PC from damage, delivering the power protection intended during a surge. As Staples’ (News - Alert) Mark Toft told the Friday Flyer, the typical business or home will experience several electrical disturbances in a given month. This could include a blackout or a spike or surge in fluctuations.

What many fail to realize when trying to plan their power protection, however, is that even the slightest of electrical blips can pose a danger to any programmable appliance. What’s worse, if your computer, telephone or high-priced server doesn’t work after a power surge, it likely won’t be covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

In many cases, however, the surge protector manufacturer is likely to warrant a product it protects. Minuteman, for instance, provides warranties against products it protects, extending beyond the typical guarantee that it will work. Of course, one of the company’s products has to be in use with the intent to protect the device from a power surge, but if it fails in any way, the company will stand behind its promise and make good on the product affected.

Believe it or not, even a small power spike can degrade the internal circuitry of an electronic device, significantly shortening its life. For this reason alone, all devices should be plugged into a proven power protection device designed to absorb the excess electrical energy created in a surge and keep it from reaching the connected equipment.

Minuteman takes this level of protection one step further. The company’s line of power protection products also work to save data when the power goes down. If an important process is underway or you didn’t save the last line of code, Minuteman does it for you, offering the right protection to get you back up and running with as little interruption as possible.
