What is something that is just as important as a fully satisfied customer base and a high profit margin for a company looking to stay in operation for the unforeseeable future? The answer is power protection, because without power almost every single activity taking place within a corporate environment will come to a screeching halt. Unfortunately, as we speak, businesses located in Kalmazoo, Mich. are learning that important lesson the hard way.

It was on Sunday, June 9, 2013 to be exact that the power went down, a day that is slower for most organizations in the area than during a typical weekday. However, for restaurants in the region that usually see a surge of customers hungry after Sunday church, the timing of the outage couldn’t have been any worse.

“If that was my only restaurant, this would be a very hard week,” said Mike Leeuw, owner of EMA (News - Alert) Enterprises, which owns Andrea’s Café among other restaurants, in a statement. “We count on Saturdays and Sundays to make the week even or a success. We were closed the whole day and thank God we didn’t lose food, but all of downtown lost the church crowd.”

Aside from the loss in potential revenue that the local brunch spots saw that day, other factors that further compound this frustrating scenario is the fact that these businesses will still be held responsible for the daily costs their facilities rake up, in spite of the fact that they weren’t in operation, and the fact that many can’t afford to pay for an insurance policy that protects them from these types of electricity failures because they are too expensive.

According to a recent Associated Press (News - Alert) report, in any given 24-hour period nearly 500,000 American lose power for an hour or more, a number that costs the economy approximately $80 to $188 billion a year. And if you thought the consequences a restaurant faces for being out of commission for an extended period of time was bad, can you even imagine how an outage affects a small- to medium-sized business’s (SMBs) bottom line?

“A few hours without power can quickly turn into thousands of dollars for a small business without a comprehensive backup plan. This is because most businesses store sales, customer information, financial records and employee data on a computer that can easily be damaged by an outage or another natural disaster,” added Matt Vollmar of Newmind Group.

One simple fix to prevent your company from suffering through any amount of prolonged downtime is to turn to a reliable and trusted power protection provider like Minuteman Power Technologies. Based in Carrollton, Tex. the company boasts a large array of uninterruptible power supplies for a variety of industries and currently distributes its products in over 100 counties worldwide.

Or, you could of course always cross your fingers (and perhaps toes) and hope for the best. But of course, that isn’t what we recommend.

“Power outages can wreak havoc on computer parts that rely on a specific voltage,” Vollmar further commented. “What we see is hard drives fail, components burn and the computer is toast. We tell customers that if you have don’t have a backup system, you can count on at least two days of downtime.”
