Blackness Strikes 'Happiest Place on Earth' During the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

By Allison Boccamazzo, Managing Content Producer

Twas the night before Christmas when a transformer blew out, causing families everywhere to give a shout – this is the holiday spirit of patrons looking to enjoy California-based Disneyland last week, where an unexpected transformer explosion caused a string of power outages.

Strong winds left much of the infamous theme park in the dark, but that’s not even be the worst of it, as over 2,000 surrounding homes in the Los Angeles area and nearly 2,000 more in the eastern L.A. county lost power after harsh winds knocked down trees and power lines.

Fox WBRC reported the National Weather Service sating winds over 50 mph in South California’s mountain passes were experiences, reaching 45 mph in Beverly Hills and Malibu.

This isn’t the first time the family theme park was cast into darkness, either. Back in 2009, Disneyland was struck by a “power dip,” causing a two-day long power outage. The incident did affect some attractions including Space Mountain and the classic Monorail, according to Disney (News - Alert) spokesman John Nicoletti, but more than half of the rides were back up and running within a few minutes.

Nicoletti further assured that all of the rides were expected to be back in operation within 30 minutes, but unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.

The importance of robust, year-round power protection cannot be stressed enough. Needless to say, ensuring proper precautions and solutions to protect critical equipment – especially those at such a populated location – is key.

While there has not yet been any further news on this year’s holiday outage, updates will certainly become known as the incident progresses.
