As the rain pounds here on the East Coast, particularly in our hometown state of Connecticut, the roads are wet, treacherous and practically begging for reckless driving. And for our neighbors to the southwest in Mississippi, though the rain didn’t cause unsafe conditions, something was in the air as Saturday night spelled bad news for a Mississippi town as a car ran into a transformer pole causing a power outage for about 6,000 customers in the Jackson area. By Sunday, more than over 1,000 customers were still without power.

According to the Jackson Police Department, the accident happened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday after a man lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a pole. Alcohol may have played a factor in the accident, according to police, and fortunately no one was hurt, a Jackson article shared. But, many were left without power for more than 24 hours (meaning that many were without their good ole’ A/C units and unable to complete any last minute weekend work before heading back this morning).

Consumers Energy spokesperson Dan Bishop revealed that the transformer that was knocked out during the accident served several different blocks of customers. While a vast majority of customers had their power restored within an hour and a half of the accident, as of 10:30 Sunday morning, about 1,000 customers were still without power.

We’ve all been there – having our power knocked out – and, for many, the incident is nothing more than a nuisance, or a bother. From not being able to watch our favorite TV shows to using our blow-dryers, a power outage can be especially annoying. But, for businesses, a bout of downtime can be truly catastrophic when you take into account lost deals, work and opportunities.

In fact, 50 percent of companies have had their reputations damaged to some extent by IT outages and downtime can cost a company an average of $150,000 per year. According to industry experts, the average company experiences 14 hours of IT downtime per year, but despite these scary statistics, 28 percent of companies haven't tested their backup plans, and more than three-quarters have found tape backup failures.

But for one company, its goal is to remind companies of the importance of power protection and of making sure that their businesses always remain up – Minuteman UPS/Para Systems (News - Alert). And, each month Minuteman focuses on spreading its message a little further.

“Perhaps the most common topic in regards to power protection is a simple one: How do I ensure I’m selecting the right UPS for my system?” Duston Nixon, marketing communications specialist at Minuteman, told TMCnet. “Our first recommendation is our sizing site, SizeMyUPS.com, as the primary resource. We have also recently added a ‘one-click dial’ feature on our website, which will connect users automatically to a product specialist that can provide feedback and suggestions in a zero-pressure situation.”
