Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) users, particularly those in data centers, have never been under greater pressure to manage and reduce energy consumption. A UPS is an electrical piece of machinery that provides emergency power to a load when the input power source fails.

With ever-stricter environmental requirements and the need to be seen as a good corporate citizen, data centers need to find a “greener” way to utilize UPS technology. There are a number of energy efficiency issues that affect UPS selection, such as the energy needed to power them and the way they draw energy. If there is one thing data center operators agree on, it’s the importance of reducing power consumption.

U.K.-based Energetix Pnu Power is pitching its products as direct replacements for large rotary and conventional battery UPS systems, claiming greater energy efficiency, lower maintenance and reduced whole life costs. The Pnu Power 1MVA Air-DRUPS uses a compressed air battery in place of a rotary solution to provide backup power, thus giving UPS a green makeover for data centers.

“Rotary-based systems have significant power losses in standby mode and normal batteries require regular maintenance to ensure reliable operation,” said Pnu Power product manager Andrew Goodwin in a press release.

The compressed air batteries use negligible power on standby compared to rotary-based systems, he noted.

Minuteman UPS/Para Systems, a leader in power protection technologies, also offers green UPS technologies. Their EnSpire EN750 and EN900 are some of the most low-cost UPS products available on the market. When operating at peak efficiency, it notifies users the device is not only protecting connected equipment, but is protecting it with very little additional draw from utility power, reducing energy costs and lessening environmental impact.

Minuteman uses recycled and recyclable materials in its solutions and packaging. Its products also feature Minuteman’s Superior Battery Management and smart charging algorithms to extend the life of your batteries

With the need for an effective UPS system in a data center, facilities need to not only focus on greener and more efficient ways to use power, but they need to focus on power protection as well. Operations depend on consistent power to function, and power protection is steadily climbing to the top of companies’ priority lists.

TMCnet recently reported on the necessity of power protection and why it is needed. According to Minuteman UPS, the answer is simple: because at any moment you can lose access to your important data.

“While people often operate under the assumption a problem will not happen to them, the fact is that outages happen frequently in the United States,” Bill Allen, marketing director at Minuteman, told TMCnet recently.
