Recently, “Security Products’” Editor-In-Chief Ralph C. Jensen interviewed Bill Allen, marketing director, at Minuteman UPS/Para Systems (News - Alert), a company that touts itself on producing the industry's most reliable power technology products that are sold in more than 100 countries throughout the world. The talk focused solely on the Minuteman PRO-RT series of UPSs.

According to Allen, the power protection series offers security installers an extremely cost-effective rack-mount option. He added that the PRO-RT is the newest addition to the PRO-E Series, Minuteman’s most successful and widely used product line with more than 400,000 units sold to date.

The product is flexible as it can be rack-mounted or floor-mounted, and an optional wall-mount bracket is available. The series also comes with an LCD display so that consumers can keep tabs on the power status, battery run-time and operational mode.

As an “additional bonus,” Minuteman’s SentryPlus power monitoring and management software is included free with all models. The unit’s USB or RS-232 port allows communication to take place between the UPS and attached equipment. The PRO-RT’s efficiency rating of 90 percent is also the highest in this class of product.

Just like other products, PRO-RT has gone green as well.

“The voltage regulation circuitry is automatically bypassed until needed, reducing vampire power consumption,” Allen said.

The product is marketed at small to medium-sized business market, and the PRO-RT product line currently includes the PRO1000RT (1000VA) and PRO1500RT (1500VA).

When Jensen asked what target customer would benefit most from this product’s features and functionalities, Allen answered small and medium sized businesses looking for “the best power protection for their vital systems and facing a tight budget.” Power problems can wreak havoc for both business owners and consumers, he noted, and “even minor power glitches that may go unnoticed can cause data corruption and severe damage to valuable electronic equipment.”

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) serve as an “electrical firewall,” Allen explained, preventing catastrophic damage from blackouts, brownouts, surges and spikes.

“When damage to expensive equipment does occur from these types of anomalies, it is generally not covered under a manufacturer’s warranty,” he said. “Because of this, a UPS is an essential component for protecting any type of mission critical electronic equipment.”

Aside from talking with “Security Products,” Allen recently published an article discussing power security on campuses and the complexities that can arise when a power outage hits a large university. Just as businesses and organizations have seen the value in protecting their electricity and data, the educational field need to catch wind of this trend, too, argues Allen.
