Five Features That Make VoIP a Winner

Most businesses have heard about the cost savings of voice-over-IP (VoIP) at this point. What businesses do not always realize, however, is that VoIP brings not only cost savings, but also a plethora of extra features above and beyond the typical business phone plan.

Here is a list of five useful features that VoIP delivers—in case saving money isn’t enough of a reason to choose VoIP!

1. Call Hunting. There’s no longer one phone in our lives. For most of us, calls now come in via office phone, smartphone, the home phone, and maybe even from our computer via a service such as Skype (News - Alert). VoIP allows calls to automatically bounce among the various phones in our life until we pick up. Alternately, VoIP can ring one employee and then another if the first person does not answer.

2. Do Not Disturb. Sometimes call hunting is useful because we intentionally are not wanting to pick up our phone! Modern business is an orchestra of constant distraction, and it can be quite useful to shut off communication temporarily to get some work done! With VoIP, we can set our phones to only ring at certain hours or block all calls for a short period while we are intentionally inaccessible. This is a must-have feature in the 2015 business environment!

3. Voicemail to Email Transcription. Having a transcript of voicemails can be a huge time-saver; I cannot tell you how many times I’ve scanned through transcripts of voicemails instead of actually listening to them, mostly because scanning text is a lot faster than listening to an entire voicemail. If I need to hear voice inflections, I’ve got that in the voicemail. Otherwise, I use VoIP’s ability to transcribe voicemail and keep things flowing in my day.

4. Mobility. We like to think we have mobile calling with our cell phones, and to a point we do. The problem is that we then must contend with a second phone number and voicemail inbox when we reach for our office phone. Also, there’s the ever-present issue of battery life when it comes to cell phones. VoIP makes mobility easy, though, because we can take the same phone number and use it in the office, from our laptop on the road, or even from our cell phone. If our smartphone dies—we can just pivot to making calls from our laptop or landline using the same number. VoIP is truly mobile.

5. Auto Attendant. One of the hidden gems of a good VoIP service is the ability to set up an automated greeter that can route incoming calls to the appropriate party. While businesses have long had phone menu systems, businesses small or large can now create and leverage this technology exceedingly easily with VoIP—usually at no additional cost.

There are other useful features that come with VoIP, of course, but these are five that top my personal list of favorites.
