Many have the dream of working from home. The idea that you never have to get out of your pajamas or hang around the water cooler is enticing enough that some will even take a pay cut to cut out the morning commute. But a desire to eliminate the mundane involved in physically going to work is not enough to convince the boss that it’s the right move for the company.

While it’s true that allowing telecommuting can drive a number of different business benefits, there does have to be a clear strategy in place and checks and balances on both ends. The situation has to be a benefit for both the company and the employee or nobody wins. A recent post from phone systems provider, Vonage (News - Alert), gives us some insight into how to do it right when it comes to working from home.

There are a number of different scenarios that make working from home a logical choice. It may be the full-time worker who must balance the pressures of the job with the high demands at home. The calm environment of the home office proves more productive than the intense pace of the corporate office. The individual who attends a business event into the late hours of the night; the employee who lives just 10 minutes from a client, yet an hour from the office; the overloaded employee who can get more done without the commute; and the business traveler who needs to decompress without other employees around – all represent opportunities where working from home may make sense.

When the situation is right, you then need the right tools. Employees need to be technologically equipped at home to carry on their required activities. This may mean mobile phone features, apps, plug and play technology, advanced phone systems, desktop software and so much more. The key is to understand what successful employees need in the corporate office and extend those capabilities to the home office.

One example as to how Vonage is staying abreast of the latest innovations is its announcement of the Vonage Mobile App now available for the Apple Watch. With this tool in place, users no longer have to pick up their iPhone (News - Alert) to respond to calls or messages. Users can now communicate with others whenever and wherever they wish, without complicating the process with additional devices. It’s a great step in wearable technology and makes sense for the telecommuter.

If you’re not sure that it’s an attraction for the user base, consider the latest from Wearable Tech World. According to new research from Salesforce – adopters are seeking to incorporate wearables into their everyday business workflow. The goal is to improve connectivity and productivity with both colleagues and customers.

For the companies interviewed for "Putting Wearables to Work: Insights on Wearable Technology in Business,” 54 percent said they have already put a Bring Your Own Wearable (BYOW) policy in place. Another 50 percent are planning to do so in the future. If that work environment is actually the basement office, streamlining available technology to improve performance is a definite perk.
