SMB Phone Systems: The Benefits of UC

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

Small businesses are playing a much greater role in the marketplace today thanks to technological advancements that have allowed them to compete along side their larger counterparts.

Voice over IP phone systems have reduced communications costs and make it possible for even smaller businesses to capitalize on improved communications capabilities.

Now unified communications or “UC” technology is also making its way into SMB offices as way to meet fluctuating demands and streamline communications.

According to industry researchers the UC SMB market will grow to 12.7 million in 2010.

A VendorGuru.com white paper, “ Unified Communications Comes to Small Business VoIP,” highlights how communications providers are now offering UC to smaller businesses via pay as you go, hosted and other scalable options that do not require any long term commitments or giant upfront investments.

Thanks to these new delivery options, small businesses are able to make use of UC solutions and optimize their phone systems and increase their competitive advantages.

UC technology brings together Voice over IP phone systems and other data applications in one point of access so users can move from different devices and platforms and continue communicating.

Other beneficial UC features include unified voice and email messaging delivered to users in a central location; video conferencing capabilities that remove the need to travel to face-to-face meetings; the ability to share screens and data for more effective collaboration and presence capabilities so users can locate the availability of contacts and the best way to reach them.

There are four key factors, the VendorGuru.com white paper notes that are truly beneficial for SMBs choosing UC.

The first is the ability to strengthen customer relationships as workers can keep in contact more easily, reduce hold times, and resolve customer issues.

Next, increased collaboration capabilities also mean a far more productive workforce that works together regardless of their physical location to meet company goals.

Also with UC, mobile workers can connect to the workplace and remain productive while on the go.

Finally, an important UC functionality in a phone system is the ability to scale the phone system to meets any changing business needs including the ability to add users and other third party applications as the business grow.

The rate at which small businesses are turning to UC has continued to increase in the current economy as it provides the ability for smaller businesses to compete in the marketplace without draining their bottom lines.
