SIP Trunking Gaining on T1 Lines as Companies Seek Efficiency: Study Shows

By Ed Silverstein, TMCnet Contributor

When it comes to selecting a SIP trunking service provider, the most important criterion is reliability – not cost – according to a recent report from Infonetics (News - Alert) Research. The report looks at users’ PBX Systems’ infrastructure and deployment plans for SIP trunking services, and shows that SIP trunk use is growing.

Market research firm Infonetics Research  recently released excerpts from SIP Trunking Deployment Strategies: North American Enterprise Survey, part of its Continuous Research Service series of analyst notes and surveys on the enterprise VoIP and unified communications market.

“There is a perception in the market place that SIP trunking is all about cost savings, and to a certain degree that’s true: SIP trunking allows organizations to build a more efficient trunking infrastructure, thus lowering their monthly telecom expenditures. But service providers should take note that when it comes to selecting a SIP trunking service provider, the most important criterion is reliability, not cost,” said Matthias Machowinski, directing analyst for enterprise voice and data at Infonetics Research (News - Alert).

In addition, the researchers found :

•Although many organizations have deployed VoIP on their premises, they still use legacy technologies to connect to the PSTN, with T1 lines the most commonly used trunking service today through 2012. However, SIP trunk use is growing, and by 2012 will be the second most commonly deployed trunking service.

•Topping the list of reasons to deploy SIP trunking are the ability to centralize applications, enabling multimedia communication, and easier management/flexibility.

•Cisco leads the list of installed PBX manufacturers by a wide margin, followed by Avaya (News - Alert).

•AT&T and Verizon are used most often as providers of SIP trunking services by survey respondents.

Infonetics Research’s SIP Trunking Deployment Strategies survey, conducted in June and published in July, looks at users’ PBX (News - Alert) infrastructure and deployment plans for SIP trunking services. Infonetics surveyed qualified IT purchase decision-makers at 100 U.S. and Canadian companies with at least 100 employees about their SIP trunking deployment models, expenditures, service provider selection criteria, reasons for and against SIP trunking services, and which vendor and service provider equipment they have installed.

Positron's PBX systems support SIP Trunking services from all the leading providers.
