Netop, a provider of remote access solutions, has announced the availability of its enterprise solution, Remote Control, for retail point-of-sales (POS) systems running the Toshiba (News - Alert) 4690 operating system.
With more than one million installations, Toshiba’s 4690 OS is one of the most popular POS systems in the world. The Remote Control ensures secure access to 4690 Controllers -- both physical and virtual.
The solution not only secures remote connections, it also transfers the graphical interface and exchanges mouse and keyboard controls, all while adhering to strict PCI (News - Alert)-DSS security requirements. With this, retailers have a comprehensive way to remotely support their retail environment.
Unlike traditional Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems – where remote access capabilities are widely available – the options for secure remote support of 4690 machines have been limited, Netop says.
“To date, remote operator connections to 4690 controllers have primarily occurred through text-based terminal access using a computer located within a retail store's LAN,” said Gregg Margosian, vice president and chief technology officer, Toshiba Global Commerce Solutions, in a statement.
“By enabling Netop in our 4690 environment, customers running 4690 can now securely access and manage their Controllers with a graphic interface from anywhere,” Margosian added.
With Netop Remote Control, retailers can connect directly to 4690 Controllers wherever they’re located. By integrating with Active Directory, the solution allows organizations to govern and validate remote support sessions against their existing identity management system. To ensure secure access, all communication is protected using 256-bit AES encryption, and the automatic logging and session recordings provide retailers with complete audit trails of remote session activities.
Netop Remote Control is available for Toshiba 4690 Controllers running version 6.4, which was released last week. This version includes features like enhanced terminal mode with deep sleep and enhanced power management, remote conversation utility for controller upgrades, expanded hardware support -- including Toshiba SurePOS 700 models 784 and C84 and Toshiba X3200m3 servers -- and more.
