Remote and secure management of connected devices help enterprises in cutting costs, boosting revenue and improving their overall productivity in a considerable manner.
Opengear (News - Alert), a company that designs, manufacturers and delivers low cost, feature rich solutions for secure remote infrastructure management, has enhanced its Opengear virtual serial port software with help from Eltima Software. The Sandy, Utah based company allows its customers to manage a range of electronic device in a remote and secure manner through its advanced cellular out-of-band management solutions and console servers, even if the network is down.
The serial device server solutions provided by Opengear are equipped with enhanced security and connectivity features and offer support to various virtual serial applications such as secure connectivity in building management; security and industrial control systems and their specialized management software across the Wide Area Network, or ‘WAN’, or cellular Wireless Wide Area Network, or ‘WWAN.’ Additionally, it seamlessly connects telemetry and communications systems with the virtualized servers and also integrates retail point-of-sale equipment and check-in systems using local wired or wireless networks.
After the new improvement, Opengear will be able to provide an enhanced user interface and a number of other helpful features as well, such as the ability to generate unlimited virtual RS232, RS422 or RS485 COM ports. The Serial to Ethernet Connector by Eltima is able to create any number of virtual serial ports that can be easily installed and managed. These virtual ports closely follow real serial ports and offer strict band rate emulation and full hardware and software flow control support as well. Also, the ports comply with a number of standard hardware signal lines such as DTR/DSR, RTS/CTS (News - Alert), RING, ERROR and DCD.
"Opengear customers can now benefit from the evolution of our product offerings with Eltima's newer virtualized serial port software, robust feature set and intuitive user interface," commented Rick Stevenson, Opengear. "Many of Opengear's customers require the ability to open remote serial ports and communicate with remotely connected serial devices."
In January 2013, Opengear launched its new central management system product offering. Opengear Lighthouse allows network engineers and system administrators to centrally manage their Opengear infrastructure management and console server appliances, and attached IT networking gear in their data center or remote sites.
