China Unicom (News - Alert) is apparently keen on accelerating the implementation of its 5G Mobile Cord services. China Unicom is already one of the world’s largest mobile service providers, and is looking to expand its network and make it faster than ever before. In order to help accomplish this goal, it is partnering with Radiysis, a services accelerator company.

This plan is based around mobile cord developments that are built around open source software. In addition, the two companies will work on developing infrastructure all across China to help facilitate the network upgrade from 4G to 5G.

“As China Unicom evolves its network from 4G to 5G, it requires a fully virtualized and disaggregated infrastructure to better serve its residential, enterprise and mobile customers,” said Joseph Sulistyo, the senior director of open networking solutions at Radisys. “We’re confident that together we can build and integrate an M-CORD POD to facilitate a robust 5G mobility infrastructure, thereby enabling China Unicom to rapidly deploy new 5G services on its network.”

In order for this network upgrade to work successfully, this conjunction between developing hardware and software will be crucial. If software is being developed specifically for the new infrastructure that will be a part of China’s 5G network, the implementation of this network upgrade should be much smoother. That ease of transition is the main focus of the partnership between China Unicom and Radisys.

“China Unicom is collaborating with Radisys to collectively develop technology enablers and use cases for 5G services,” said Dr. Tang Xiongyan, CTO of the Network Technology Research Institute at China Unicom. “Radisys will also provide us with its recommended deployment scenarios and feasibility analysis as well as an effective prototype demonstration of the solution in our mobile network. We’re encouraged that its efforts will yield great results for our subscribers.”

This partnership should further highlight the need for collaboration and foresight whenever large scale technological developmental endeavors are taking place. China Unicom’s collaboration with Radisys should bring unprecedented smoothness to the installation of 5G in China.
