With open networking increasingly viewed as a way to get the most out of a network and, in turn, the most out of its users, advances in this field are commonly welcome as a means to push further improvement. Big Switch Networks (News - Alert) recently made its own advances on this front, bringing out a new set of options for its Big Cloud Fabric system, which should make it an increasingly attractive proposition in a market full of open networking options.

Perhaps the biggest change to Big Cloud Fabric was the adoption of new networking support for a variety of hyper-converged solutions. This includes systems powered by the VM ware vSAN system, as well as VM ware Horizon powered virtual desktop and applications. Better yet, it also includes support for multi-container networking, including Kubernetes and Mesosphere DC/OS operations.  That even allows for Red Hat (News - Alert) OpenShift Container Platform operations.

Additionally, the system was given some performance upgrades as well, helping to ensure that Big Cloud Fabric will be the name many think of when it comes to putting together a switching network to build a proper software-defined data center (SDDC). To help make its  case, Big Switch has a launch webinar planned for February 8 at 10am Pacific. It will feature CEO Douglas Murray and chief product officer Prashant Gandhi running down the newest features of Big Cloud Fabric.

Already, several organizations have turned to Big Cloud Fabric to support open networking operations; Dubai Municipality, for example, is using Big Cloud Fabric in its data center network. Part of the larger Smart Dubai initiative, which is geared toward better organizing city services to get the most out of what resources are at hand, Big Cloud Fabric's versatility and power allow for wide-scale operational use.

That versatility and power are already drawing users in, and as Big Switch Networks augments tools like Big Cloud Fabric with more capability, the value proposition will only improve from there. Big Switch Networks has a great potential to lever open the market and allow itself access to some serious market share here, and all it needs to do is market to its strengths. Those strengths have already brought some clients in, so now it's really only a matter of putting those successful use cases to work—if it can run a city, it can run your business—and realizing reward from there.

It may not work out that well in the end, but Big Switch Networks definitely has a case to make in the open networking market. With plenty of competitors out there, it will be a fight, but Big Switch Networks has the tools to come out ahead.
