Pica8: Networking Limitations a Challenge for the Enterprise

The promise of open networking in the enterprise has grabbed a lot of peoples’ attention, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be a cakewalk.

That was the general assessment of James Liao, CEO and co-founder of open networking giant Pica8. Liao appeared recently at the Open Compute Summit gathering called the OCP (News - Alert) U.S. Summit, held in San Jose, California. He participated in a roundtable discussion hosted by Jeff Frick and Stu Miniman from the SiliconANGLE Media team. The trio discussed the challenges of open computing, its ecosystem and networking in general.

According to SiliconANGLE online, Liao noted how open computing had grown in just one year since his last appearance at the conference.

“The biggest change we have seen in the last year is the ecosystem coming together,” he noted. “The ecosystem includes the application, the controller … a lot of platforms. So we’re seeing a lot of players here to push [it] forward.”

Liao also addressed the value of the so-called ‘whitebox’ and the impact it’s having: “If you think about the adoption of the whitebox, there are three segments that are really interesting to all the big movers,” Liao said. “The first one is data-centric. Everybody knows that service providers need whitebox. And this is the segment that really knows about how to use the whitebox, not only on the server and storage, but also on the network itself.”

But, he added, “If you move … to a different segment, enterprise, [they’re] moving a little slower than the data-centric, because they tend to be more conservative about what kind of service they want to use.” The third point he mentioned was a “segment that people don’t realize … the OEM business.”

Taking the theme of ‘three things’ to the next logical step, Liao was asked what three things Pica8 would be focusing on in the coming year.

“SDN and whitebox are here, they’re ready,” he acknowledged. “We’re going to see good growth of revenue and the customer base. We will continue to build partnerships … Networking is the barrier, and we have to work together to solve that problem.”
