SugarCRM Tipped as CRM SaaS Short-List Option

If you’re looking for customer relationship management delivered via SaaS, there are lots of other worthy products worth a look, primary amongst them SugarCRM (News - Alert), the primary open source SaaS option.
 
Industry observer Amy Schurr wrote recently on how IT leaders “in need of updated applications but can’t swing the capital investment” should look at SaaS.
 
She cites the much-quoted Gartner (News - Alert) report forecasting that the worldwide enterprise SaaS market will surpass $6.4 billion this year, up 27 percent from 2007, adding “you may remember the hype over application service providers at the beginning of the decade, but SaaS (News - Alert) is not the same as application hosting or application outsourcing.”
 
Earlier this month industry observer Edward J Correia had a nice piece on SugarCRM, specifically on the ability to track Gmail messages about specific features and bugs from within your defect tracking system. You can do that “if you’re using the open-source SugarCRM,” he writes, “thanks to a team of Italian developers that launched DolceGmail.”
 
The new plug-in for Firefox, Correia writes, links Google’s (News - Alert) browser-based e-mail system with SugarCRM, “allowing users to add contacts, e-mail messages and attachments from Gmail directly to their SugarCRM system.”

“SugarCRM is a business application framework with a CRM app on top,” Clint Oram, vice president and co-founder of SugarCRM told Correia. “We have tools for building new modules on top, and you might not even use the CRM aspect. Customers can build new objects specific to their business.”

“The popularity of the on-demand deployment model has increased significantly within the last four years. Initial concerns over security, response time, and service availability have diminished for many organizations as SaaS business and computing models have matured and adoption has become pervasive,” says Sharon Mertz, research director at Gartner.
 
In fact, Schurr writes, “Gartner forecasts the SaaS market to hit $14.8 billion in 2012. What’s driving deployment are the tough economy, better broadband, and a need to rapidly deploy software to meet a specific business need.”
