Reliance Communications (News - Alert) is launching a content delivery network, Fast Edge, in India.
The CDN, like all content delivery networks, will cache popular content closer to users. That should allow for a more consistent user experience and will lighten the load on data centers, particularly during peak times. The Fast Edge CDN will connect to nine data centers in Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.
According to Trustiko, among the best CDN providers are MaxCDN, Incapsula, Liquid Web, Cachefly, CDN.net, Rackspace, Cloudflare, Google Page Speed, Amazon CloudFront, and Akamai (News - Alert).
“Today’s consumer wants instant gratification,” notes Matt Levine in an Aug. 18 Cachefly blog. “Studies show that if a retailer’s site is making $100k per day, even as little as a 1 second delay can potentially cost $2.5M in lost sales every year.”
This quote emphasizes the importance of caching.
As for Reliance Communications in particular, the company has been busy lately on a number of fronts.
In July, Reliance Communications introduced the MoviNet Plan, which combines movies, music, and internet access. The prepaid MoviNet Plan starts at an MRP of Rs 235 per month and provides 2.5 GB of high-speed any use data.
“Increasingly, entertainment is being consumed on mobile phones, and we are delighted to partner with RCOM to offer the benefit of our entertainment services, immersive features and a unique experience—all at the subscribers’ convenience; anywhere, anytime and in the preferred language,” said Neeraj Roy, founder and CEO of Hungama Digital Media Entertainment.
The company also has been rolling out 4G cellular services and in late August Reliance Communications introduced Next-Gen Reliance 4G LTE (News - Alert) APP-TO-APP Calling. This new feature enables 4G LTE customers to get a daily data credit of 7MB for 10 minutes of HD app-to-app calls.
