Video has become an important communications tool for enterprises. But this bandwidth-hungry medium can also have negative repercussions on other traffic traversing enterprise networks. To help businesses address that, IBM (News - Alert) has introduced Ustream eCDN.

This new service, which is now in beta, entails the installation of a virtual server within a company’s firewall. Once that’s done, eCDN delivers a single instance of a live or on-demand video asset that is cached and served to viewers as needed. But delivering video as a single instance, Ustream (News - Alert) eCDN lowers the impact of video traffic on the larger enterprise network.

The New York State Senate is among the first users of Ustream eCDN. "Ustream's eCDN solution has helped us meet the New York State Senate's growing demand for streaming video without degrading our network performance," said Jim Bell, director of Senate Technology Services at New York State Senate.

Ustream is an IBM company. Ustream eCDN will be commercially available starting in the second quarter. It works with the company’s other solutions, including Ustream Align, a video platform offered as an optional service.

Enterprises today are leveraging video for a broad range of applications, including

employee training; investor meetings; videoconferences with customers, partners, and their own teams; and more.

Total worldwide enterprise video equipment market revenue in fourth quarter of last year was $627.5 million, up from $612 million in same quarter the previous year, according to industry analyst firm IDC (News - Alert).

The number of videoconferencing units sold in the fourth quarter increased 16.3 percent quarter over quarter, but was flat year over year.

"Some good news for the worldwide enterprise videoconferencing equipment market. It enjoyed positive growth in both quarter-over-quarter and year-over-year revenue numbers in the fourth quarter of 2015. In addition, revenue was slightly positive for 2015, stemming the tide of three consecutive years of annual revenue declines," said Rich Costello, senior analyst for enterprise communications infrastructure at IDC.
