Advantech Network Processor Models Designed for Industrial Environment

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Advantech (News - Alert) is offering two new innovations in the network processor: two new embedded automation devices offering a number of different serial ports, dual Mini PCI (News - Alert) Express slots and a design that is completely fanless.

According to this Windows for Devices report, the latest network processor innovations from Advantech, the UNO-2174A and UNO-2178A, are described as designs that are rugged, cableless and fanless with the ability to perform in harsh industrial environments.

The two devices are designed to be nearly identical, although the UNO-2174A relies on Intel's (News - Alert) single-core Atom N450 and the UNO-2178A offers the dual-core D510.

In addition, the UNO-2178A provides another four RS232 ports to those already provided by the UNO-2174A. These ports are provided by Advantech by repurposing the DB25 connector, which is essentially used to provide a parallel port within the network processor.

Both network processor models come with 2GB of RAM (News - Alert) built in, although expandability is not cited. The models provide 2.5-inch SATA drive bays and front-accessible CompactFlash slots. A total of six USB 2.0 ports are provided within the front panels, as well as the multi-purpose DB25 connector, audio I/O and a PS/2 port.

The VGA port is also visible on both network processor models. And, according to Advantech, resolution in these models is something to write home about. The UNO-2174A offers resolutions up to 1400 x 1050 pixels, while the UNO-2178A supports up to 2048 x 1546 pixels for optimal performance.

By contrast, the rear panels on the network processor models offer two RS232/485 ports and two RS232/422/485 ports, in addition to a gigabit Ethernet port. There are also two Mini PCI slots and a SIM slot to deliver 3G support when needed.

Advantech has also indicated that an optional daughterboard is available for the network processors that will allow for the addition of one PC/104 card and one PCI-104 card. The cards can receive both 5V and 3.3V power and the processors themselves will accept DC inputs from 9V to 36V.

The UNO-2174A and UNO-2178A are designed to operate between 14 and 158 deg. F even with 100 percent CPU loading. At the same time, the network processes are Windows Embedded Standard, Windows Embedded Compact, and Linux equipped.

While pricing and availability have not been shared by the company, it appears that the network processor models are now available.
