High-Speed Network Processor Standard in New Hospital PC from Advantech

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Hospital patients are set to experience a whole new infotainment experience thanks to network process manufacturer Advantech (News - Alert). The company has announced an innovative solution that includes a 15.6-inch touchscreen, as well as a single- or dual-core Intel Atom network processor. This latest innovation brings new technology advancements to its PC line specifically designed for hospital patients.

Advantech first released a PC designed for this market in 2009. This latest innovation, a PIT-1502W, offers a resistive touchscreen with 1366 x 768 pixel resolution, a two-megapixel camera, WiFi (News - Alert), RFID and a smartcard reader. This new release is what Advantech refers to as a refresh as it switches to Intel’s (News - Alert) ICH8M chipset, offering a choice of the single-core Atom D140 or the dual-core Atom D510.

For those truly interested in the power of the network processor and the features of the device, this latest innovation offers a 15.6-inch resistive touchscreen and an improved contrast ratio (300:1). The available webcam now offers users the choice of two megapixels instead of 1.3. This improved functionality can extend the life and the value of the device.

According to Advantech, patients will have the opportunity to entertain themselves with the device’s optional TV tuner, receive updates on their condition through the hospital’s intranet, and even keep in touch with relatives on the Internet. The device with the next generation network processor is also offered with an optional wired remote controller and handset.

The company suggests that the device is suitable for VoIP calling, leveraging the Internet connection to connect with other individuals. Even when keeping this infotainment portal piece focused on the hospital stay, patients can still benefit from the nurse call button and LED indicator.

The PIT-1502W is also designed with a standard smart card reader, optional bar code scanning and RFID capabilities, as well as a white-and-blue color scheme. The network processor device will accept up to 2GB of RAM (News - Alert), and fixed storage is provided by either CompactFlash or an optional SATA hard disk drive. An option 802.11b/g/n wireless LAN adapter can be accepted in the Mini PCI (News - Alert) Express slot.

The PC will also support wired connectivity, including three USB 2.0 ports, a gigabit Ethernet port, a microphone input, a line output, and an isolated serial port. Stereo speakers are also included with this high speed network processor device, which will run on Windows 7 and Linux. The device is available now, although Advantech needs to be contacted directly to inquire about price.
