Advantech Releases New Module Based on Intel N455 Network Processor

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Irvine, California-based Advantech, a developer of industrial PCs and network processors, selling embedded platform tools across multiple vertical markets, has announced the release of SOM-7562 B1 COM-Ultra Module based on the Intel (News - Alert) N455 network processor.

The new B1 version module with N455 network processor from Intel incorporates upgraded memory technology from DDR2 to DDR3, wider temperature (-40 ~ 85 degrees Celsius) provision, and an optional 5V-only version with more competitive power consumption.

Company officials say the SOM-7562, their COM-Ultra low power product released last year, is “especially suited” to portable device applications, since the N455 platform is integrated in a compact board (84 x 55 mm) as small as a credit card.

The inherited compact form factor, software utility support, and all-in-one advantage from the A1 version are used as examples of improvements to promote the product, as is the fact that the SOM-7562 B1 further upgrades memory capacity from 512 MB to 1 GB, in the words of company officials, “making systems run more smoothly.”

The Intel N455 network processor has been upgraded to support DDR3 with better performance than DDR2, and incorporates better energy saving technology.

Last week TMC reported that Advantech (News - Alert) Industrial Automation Group introduced two new 8-port EN50155 IP67 managed Ethernet switches, the EKI-6558TI and EKI-6559TMI.

The EN50155 certification and redundant X-Ring 'allow for trusted connection to Ethernet networks,' company officials said, 'which is particularly useful for passenger information and video surveillance systems. With IP67 rated housings and vibration- resistant M12 connectors, these switches are built to withstand tough environments and ensure reliable transmissions.'

The EKI-6558TI and EKI-6559TMI have watertight and weatherproof cases to protect against mechanical stress, moisture and condensation, dirt, dust or vibrations. The EKI-6559TMI offers two fiber optic ports to guarantee interference-free connections and extend communication range.
