SUNY Geneseo Receives Cisco NetFlow Help from Plixer International

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The State University of New York at Geneseo has the typical computer-intensive setup around campus, plus about 3,000 students in residence halls all needing Internet access. That's a lot of demand.

The campus's network manager, Rick Coloccia, needed a way to analyze the data running through his network to decide if the university needed to buy more bandwidth or other upgrades to complete a network traffic analysis.

Enter flexible NetFlow, a protocol developed by Cisco Systems (News - Alert). It does just what Coloccia needed done in the way of network traffic analysis and other functions – collects IP traffic info. But you need other technology to really see if it optimizing full ROI. Being on a rather modest education budget, Coloccia found the robust tool made by Plixer, Scrutinizer NetFlow Analyzer, which fit his needs and budget.

The tool handles network traffic reporting and network behavior analysis through collecting and archiving data, giving Coloccia the comprehensive reports he needs to examine the network usage details and make intelligent, informed decisions. “With upwards of 3,100 students calling the residence halls ‘home,’ it’s our job to make sure the data flow is run-ning efficiently," he said noting Scrutinizer NetFlow Analyzer's "reporting, dynamic traffic analysis, automated features and convenient archiving" capabilities.

Let’s be honest, at any college campus, you have a large number of people downloading music illegally. And Coloccia found that NetFlow was a good way to ferret out who was downloading what on the system – clearing the innocent and warning the guilty. Plus, it helps the university deal with the normal run of malicious viruses and "overactive applications" unbalancing the bandwidth management systems.

In addition, he also likes the daily report emails that the NetFlow analyzer gives him, including data on the systems that have downloaded the most from the Internet, and alerting him to other incidences of odd behavior online.
