Plixer Demonstrating New Features of Scrutinizer NetFlow Analyzer V9 Right Now

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

At the Cisco (News - Alert) Live show taking place in London, which is running all week from Monday through Friday, Plixer will be demonstrating its new Scrutinizer NetFlow Analyzer 9.0.

As our all-expenses paid trip to London to cover this event seems to have been misplaced in the mail, we tuned in to a recent blog post from Plixer’s JimmyD – “The NetFlow Detective”, who explained what the attendees in London will be seeing from this product, which was described on Plixer’s Facebook page earlier this week as a tool intended “to help network administrators peer deep into packet traffic flowing over corporate networks to restore and regain valuable bandwidth for priority business applications.”

Jimmy notes that “advanced Netflow integration has been a hot topic with most of the customers that I have been working with this past week.”

Makes sense that they’re at Cisco Live, of course, since Cisco officials are touting their Cisco 2900 Series, which they describe as combining “security, IOS-based traffic control and visibility,” noting that Cisco IOS Software features, “such as NBAR, IP SLA, and NetFlow,” help with visibility and monitoring traffic patterns and application performance, “while IOS features such as QoS, ACLs, and PfR intelligently control the traffic to maximize the quality of the user experience and employee productivity.”

As Jimmy points out, when he’s out talking to companies, they have “high volume Netflow,” and are used to the idea of getting “best of breed” tools to help with network monitoring system. Which according to Jimmy, is where Scrutinizer v9 fits in the picture, “since it has added to its ability to integrate with many of today’s network monitoring” products.

While integration has always been available in some form with the Scrutinizer, v9, Jimmy says, it now lets users integrate “any Scrutinizer report or gadget  into another Web-based application.” The usefulness and convenience of this, of course, is immediately apparent. because as Jimmy helpfully explains it means you can “pass login credentials along with the URL of any report into any external Web-based application.”

Plixer’s Scrutinizer Product Manager, Michael Patterson, who does seem to be enjoying London, noted on Facebook (News - Alert) that Scrutinizer has value in “social media applications and ubiquitous personal smartphone/tablet traffic clogging corporate networks,” since as he correctly observes, “today’s hand-held smartphones and tablets are capable of producing almost as much network traffic as a typical desktop PC,” what with all the streaming data hogging valuable network space that could be used for, oh, business apps instead of Facebook and streaming YouTube (News - Alert) videos. Scrutinizer can be used to ferret out such network abuse.

Our intrepid NetFlow Detective, Jimmy, discusses another integration option available on the Scrutinizer v9, the Cross Check feature, which he describes as giving users “a dynamic scoreboard view of your network... by polling your current monitoring applications and generating a score.” This, by the way, is one of the features the company’s making a point of in the London demonstrations.
