VoLTE Part of a Broader Communications Shift For Telecoms

By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer

The VoLTE market has had to adapt and change over the last few years, despite the fact that the technology is relatively new. The rise of IP multimedia subsystems (IMS) in general have led those companies that make their money through voice driven services to look for new and better ways to keep their customers.

A new report by the industry analyst Visiongain (News - Alert) says that VoLTE itself is a kind of natural reaction to diminishing revenue returns of the voice services market. The same report points out that in 2013, quite a few of the world’s most developed telecoms networks, such as Japan and the U.S. saw data revenues officially surpass voice services. VoLTE is a kind of service that takes advantage of the benefits of voice services but puts them over an IMS framework that has a set of protocols that allow voice calls to be delivered just like data flows over an LTE (News - Alert) network.

Visiongain has said it believes there will be more than 101.7 million active VoLTE subscriptions across the globe by the end of 2015. That finding is in line with other reports that are seeing a growth in the VoLTE market, especially when it comes to the Far East. One report actually said that this part of the world is currently taking credit for 70 percent of the total VoLTE rollouts.

Visiongain believes that broader LTE rollouts mean that VoLTE is going to be an integral part of a network’s architecture. As a whole, the industry is said to be seeing a rather large shift in focus and planning. That shift is going to demand more attention to network capacity and interoperability. This new focus will also allow VoLTE providers to take advantage of the growth and those that offer the service will see a growth in subscriptions in the next few years.
