Laying the Foundation for Mobile VoIP

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Growing up, phone lines were an everyday part of life in the United States. Counting the telephone poles while riding down the highway in the family car was a common game and twisting the long cord on the rotary phone in the hall was a needed distraction while talking to a friend of the opposite sex.

The same won’t likely be true for the next generation. The rotary phone is something we only tell our kids about and the need for landlines is waning. Where global communications are concerned, the opportunity to send voice across the Internet eliminates the need for traditional infrastructure and significantly lowers cost. When mobility is entered into the mix with mobile VoIP, the benefits just get better.

For these reasons, companies throughout the global marketplace are adopting VoIP as their main communication strategy and their reasons are somewhat varied. According to InformationWeek Research in a study of 280 companies currently using or planning to implement VoIP, lower costs is the leading factor for adoption, but not the only benefit to consider. While 66 percent fall into this category, 43 percent simply want to merge their voice and data networks.

Companies are also adopting the VoIP platform to ensure one-stop communications in at least one area. Another 36 percent want to increase collaboration in at least two areas and 31 percent want ease of management when it comes to their communications. Scalability is a focus for 24 percent, especially as these companies adopt mobile VoIP strategies and want to hit the ground running.

Regardless of the strategy for the individual organization, VoIP offers agility, scalability, privacy and security through easier encryption and location privacy, enhanced routing and call management, cost savings and ease of integration into online platforms. Anything accessible through the cloud is more easily integrated when both options are available online. Configuration, management and execution are all streamlined, allowing users to focus on business processes and not the technology on the backend.

As professionals travel the world to make connections, close deals and collaborate face-to-face, mobile VoIP gains even more value for the user. The corporate environment that already relies on VoIP extends the same capabilities to users in the field. As a result, the individual on the other side of the city can communicate as if he were in his office. Likewise, if he’s on the other side of the world, he uses the same capabilities through provided applications that reduce the cost, ensure connectivity and optimize performance.

For these reasons alone, companies throughout the world are considering VoIP implementations and the benefits mobile VoIP can extend. If you haven’t yet made the change, now is a great time to start developing your own strategy.
