Find 'The One' VoIP Provider That's Right For You

By Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Contributor

It happens to the best of us: There you are, looking at profile after profile, but nothing seems to be panning out. Maybe you’re just confused and don’t know what you want. What about what you need? Sometimes, just sometimes — there’s more out there for you than you’ve noticed. If you can’t put your finger on why you’re still looking, perhaps it’s time for a little self-reflection.

Sounds a bit like online dating, doesn’t it? While it’s a likely scenario for those looking for “the one,” the same reflection applies to finding the right VoIP provider.

A decade ago, it would have been a different story, as the market wasn’t nearly as saturated as it is today. VoIP got its start as a simple voice platform, but what we’re seeing now is VoIP being part of a larger picture, like unified communications for example. VoIP enables a range of applications not previously made available, such as the multimedia contact center and integrated Web and audio conferencing. Converged applications such as UC can take advantage of VoIP and enable companies to not only increase revenue and decrease costs, but enhance productivity and improve customer service.

The growing adoption of VoIP makes it easier for companies to employ more features in their phone systems. The increasing recognition of a need for efficiency with lower costs within an organization is an influence that's helping to drive the acceptance of VoIP in the business world.

As the business looking for VoIP services, you’re at an advantage. Providers are up against a lot of competition, so they will be fighting for your patronage. Like a dating profile, you’ll need to list your needs and wants, and for them, they need to demonstrate how they can help you achieve your communications goals.

What should you be looking for in a VoIP provider? It should have up-to-date applications, like remote telecommuting and even applications for personal productivity such as the unified messaging and “follow me” services make VoIP a multifaceted solution. It should match your budgetary needs, and above all, be current with the ever-growing mobile landscape.

VoIP is available on current smartphones and other mobile devices so small businesses can save on overhead and ditch the rented office. VoIP expands the call cost advantages of a VoIP business phone system to the mobile handset. Staff can make calls from their mobile phone as if they were sitting at a traditional workstation without incurring excess mobile charges.

Mobile VoIP is imposing itself as a means of making phone calls for a much cheaper price than what they would cost over GSM and roaming networks. Mobile VoIP enables you to reach people anytime and anywhere but only as long as there is an Internet connection for your phones to connect to.

VoIP is not at all a hefty investment. In fact, the technology pays for itself within a few months. The money saved within the first few months of use will be rather evident in the communication bills.

Are you ready to find “the one”?
