In the race to come out on top of the market, there’s never a real winner, and the race never seems to come to a close. In the telecom and datacom equipment and software industry, the race is on, and getting faster than ever.

Recent research into global revenues has indicated that in the overall telecom and datacom network equipment and software market, the top five share leaders are Cisco, Huawei, Ericsson, Alcatel Lucent and ZTE (News - Alert). These companies hold essentially the same shares as they did the previous year.

In the enterprise segment of the market, shares held relatively steady compared to the previous year’s research. Cisco was found in the lead, followed by a close race between Avaya (News - Alert), Brocade, HP and Juniper.

The research also anticipated the telecom and datacom industry’s serious growth in the years to come — to the tune of an expected $1 trillion. As the market grows, researchers are keeping a close eye on the companies leading the charge. The telecom and datacom equipment and software industry sales hit $183 billion in 2013, a three percent increase from sales in 2012. Asia Pacific’s revenue in this sector grew six percent year-over-year; this increase put the region ahead of North America in telecom and datacom equipment revenue, as North America increased by just 4.5 percent.

Michael Howard, co-founder of Infonetics (News - Alert) and co-author of the report, adds, "Looking at just the service provider equipment space, we're seeing a shakeup in vendor market share, with Huawei leapfrogging longtime number-one Ericsson to take the top spot in 2013. While Huawei (News - Alert)'s been doing well in a number of regions, China's economy is a key factor keeping Huawei's growth so strong."
