How Mobile VoIP is Taking the Desk Phone on the Road

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Do you often find mobility to be the thing that allows you to get more work done, but the tethered office phone is still a hindrance? Mobile employees have for years taken to the benefit of accessing the programs and files from remote locations, but limits still existed where the business phone system was concerned. Now, new cloud technology and mobile VoIP are opening up a whole new world of communication opportunity.

When VoIP first hit the market, it offered companies a whole new way to stay connected at a fraction of the cost of the traditional business phone system. While quality wasn’t necessarily the greatest and bandwidth was an interesting challenge, users were finding they had access to new integration that allowed for productivity and efficiency in a whole new way. Now that mobile VoIP has entered the scene, employees have access to full desk phone functionality regardless of location.

A recent post in Business News Daily highlighted the growing opportunities in this space and how mobility tools can now sync seamlessly with the main office. Today’s VoIP systems offer mobility features and smartphone applications that provide this needed functionality. Plus, all outbound calls can still register to the business and all calls made to an employee’s business line are automatically transferred to their smartphone.

For the employee who is both mobile and in the office, calls easily switch between the Wi-Fi in the building and the user’s provider without interrupting the call. The user does nothing to make the switch, other than physically walking to the car. Plus, the user doesn’t have to rely on cellphone minutes unless they are outside of the reach of the corporate Wi-Fi or free hotspots located throughout metropolitan areas.

To make use of mobile VoIP on a smartphone, users generally just login with their business credentials so they can receive and make calls from a business line. This also provides for access to the company voicemail directory, to send and receive online faxes and even to join in on conference calls. Again, all of these things happen, regardless of location.

Now that the business phone system has caught up with mobility demands, companies and users are much better equipped to get into the field and still have access to the assets used within the corporate environment. Users don’t have to rely on their minutes, companies can drive productivity and still protect the brand image and everyone can enjoy the benefits of Bring Your Own Device policies. It truly is a win-win as productivity soars and customers get the personalized, in-the-field attention they need.
