Calling Card Apps Improve the Mobile VoIP Experience

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

The age of mobility has arrived. More and more consumers are relying on their mobile device to support their personal and professional activities. Whether we travel abroad or stay local, the landline has lost its luster and the smartphone has claimed top market placement. Still, users want the best value for their dollar and are putting more focus on mobile VoIP.

VoIP gained considerable attention over the last decade as companies and residents alike were drawn to the idea of eliminating much of their communication costs by sending voice data over the Internet. As mobile communications emerged as the primary channel for staying connected, a combination of VoIP and mobile capabilities was the next logical step.

Still, it wasn’t a step that happened naturally as wireless carriers did their best to block the use of mobile VoIP. Skype (News - Alert), for instance, has long been accessible through devices that could access the Internet. Actually launching the application, however, was something frowned upon and even blocked by carriers as it cut into their revenue streams.

As consumers are often able to get exactly what they want when trends dictate, wireless carriers were soon making way for not only Skype, but other mobile VoIP applications.

One other attractive option is that of calling cards. Once a heavily demanded option for cutting the cost of communications, calling cards are making a significant comeback as mobile users seek to stay connected at a lower cost.

To meet this demand and streamline the process of using calling cards, mobile VoIP provider, REVE Systems developed the iTel Mobile Hybrid Dialer.

This Calling Cards App eliminates the painful step of using traditional calling cards when dialing a long stream of numbers was needed. The iTel Mobile Hybrid Dialer automates the use of calling cards and provides IP calling so users can now make VoIP calls from their mobile phones, avoiding the cost of minute-based plans.

The app, which supports 3G/4G and GPRS for Internet connectivity, provides users with PIN-less calls so they no longer need to remember an access number, PIN number or even a destination number each time they use a calling card. As the app integrates with the users phonebook, they can leverage all of the capabilities and benefits of the mobile device, without the typical associated costs of these extras.

VoIP service providers also benefit as they can offer the Calling Card App as a service for their customer base. The app supports Android, iOS and BlackBerry (News - Alert) platforms and with white label branding options, they can leverage the iTel Mobile Hybrid Dialer as their own, increasing brand visibility while further driving customer loyalty.

While the consumer isn’t slated to get less mobile anytime soon, the demand for low cost connections is on the rise. Mobile VoIP is meeting the demand, creating opportunities for service providers and users alike. With the addition of calling card capabilities, the right connections now have no boundaries.
