The age of Big Data has arrived and companies throughout the world are doing their best to capture information to turn it into valuable business intelligence. Switch partitioning or partitioning in general focuses on the separation of data so each subset is accessed and managed quickly and efficiently. The creation of a partition doesn’t actually physically move the data. Instead the metadata about the location of the data is changed. In order to switch partitions, there are a number of general requirements that have to be met. For instance, both tables have to exist before the switch is completed. The receiving partition must exist and it must be empty. The same is true for the non-partitioned table. All partitions must exist on the same column and source and target tables need to share the same file group.

Each partition acts as a completely new switch. The owner can easily use the new switch and the child partition switch as independent switches. The administrator can generate three partitions by default, although it is configurable and can allow the partition facility to the child switch as well.
