Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) predicts that mobile Internet will save the Indonesian telecommunications industry in 2013, and expand beyond data communication, Frost & Sullivan said in a recent statement.

As smartphones drop in price and social networking usage increases, the demand for mobile data grows. Demands and needs change over time, so telecom companies need to change as well to allow growth to continue.

Mobile Internet expansion will create new revenue streams as well.

“The main four windows to go beyond just data segment are mobilization (a trend where devices, softwares and services are starting to adapt and incorporate smartphone-like features and capabilities); mobile payment; mobile e-commerce; and mobile advertising,” said Dev Yusmananda, the Head of Consulting ICT Practice.

Frost & Sullivan also predicts wireless Internet device ownership in Indonesia growing significantly. Dev said the wireless dongle will experience 47.5 percent CAGR (compounded annual growth rate), smartphones will have 16.1 percent CAGR, and tablets with 11.6 percent CAGR by 2013.

In global trends, Frost & Sullivan projects smartphone shipments will hit one billion by 2016. The Asia Pacific will be the fastest growing region, receiving 37.6 percent of the smartphone shipments. In 2015, it’s predicted that Asia Pacific will be the largest region for mobile payments; Japan and South Korea will be leaders in mobile payment adoption.
