Mobile VoIP Usage More than Doubled in 2011January 23, 2012
By Oliver VanDervoort, Contributing Writer
Outsiders may not understand exactly why it is happening, but a new report shows that the adoption of mobile VoIP applications is only continuing to grow and hit 29 million at the end of 2011. There are of course several good reasons for mobile phone users to embrace all that the VoIP can provide. The number one reason that more and more smartphone users are going the VoIP route because they can no longer to make as many calls as they used, to thanks to voice plans from cell providers. Minutes are coming at a premium and for some; VoIP is a way to work around that. Skype (News One of the most interesting factoids that was pulled from the study conducted by NPD In-Stat (News - Alert) was that a large amount of the growth is taking place across the pond from the United States. According to this study, VoIP adoption actually saw quite the explosion. At the end of 2010, there were roughly 9 million mobile VoIP users in the world. That means that the number of mobile VoIP users more than doubled in 2011. According to this particular study, quite a few of those new users popped up in Europe and Asia. The company says that a lot of this growth is simply because more and more people are just starting to use smartphones. That is one of the reasons that more applications are popping up all the time. One of the best examples of this is when the app Freephoo was released last week in India. This particular app does many of the same things Skype does, for those who don’t have access to Skype. Perhaps most impressive from this study is that NPD expects mobile VoIP use to continue to explode. By the end of 2015, NPD says that there will actually by as many as 410 million mobile VoIP users.
