Dialogic ITEXPO Speaker Discusses Mobile Video Revolution

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

The word “revolution” – one of the most overused in press releases – is defined by Webster’s dictionary as “a sudden, radical or complete change.”

That’s why Bob Logan (News - Alert), director of media labs at Dialogic, uses the word sparingly.

“I think the word ‘revolution’ is probably appropriate in this case,” Logan told TMCnet, referring to “The Mobile Video Revolution,” a session he is co-presenting at the upcoming ITEXPO (News - Alert) conference in Miami, to be held Jan. 20-22. “When I think of revolution, I think of something that changes peoples’ behavior. And mobile video is certainly changing peoples’ behavior.”

So what makes the idea of mobile video revolutionary?

Logan used the example of technology’s evolving role at rock concerts.

“When you think of a concert, [a few years ago] everyone was bringing camera phones and taking photos, then taking videos,” Logan told TMCnet. “And what’s happening now is that they’re recording videos and uploading them to [send to] their friends.”

At the ITEXPO, Logan and other speakers – including Hugh Goldstein, managing partner, AU24; James Awad, marketing product manager, Octasic (News - Alert); and Cliff Rees, CEO, Xcast -- will discuss how mobile video telephony is more than just the ability to watch movies on the handset or make 3G video calls.

Going forward, operators are looking for ways to generate more revenue from video telephony services. The presentation will provide a full overview of the various video telephony opportunities in mobile, from consumer-based services like video-ringback tones to next-generation business applications, such as video blogging and conferencing.

Dialogic (News - Alert) is trying to position itself as a company whose technology will provide the best user experience in video, particularly in tough conditions, Logan said.

For one recent example, consider what’s happening in Latin America in preparation for the next two World Cup tournaments.

The FIFA 2010 World Cup, to be held for the first time in South Africa, will bring together more than a dozen finalist teams to compete in June and July. In 2014, Brazil will host the World Cup tournament.

In early September, Dialogic announced an agreement with Brazilian value-added distributor WDC Networks to market its mobile video platforms. And it hopes to use these platforms to liven up soccer fans in the South American country.

Through this new partnership with WDC Networks, Dialogic will also launch a number of training programs, including a video school in Sao Paulo. The school will teach developers and system integrators how to work with its signature IP phone applications (such as its “Integrated Media Gateways” and “Media Processing Boards”), as well as its more advanced 3G-, 324m- and H.264-fueled mobile video technologies (such as its “Host Media” processing products and “Vision” family of servers and gateways).

To find out more about Dialogic, visit the company at ITEXPO East 2010. To be held Jan. 20 to 22 in Miami, ITEXPO is the world’s premier IP communications event. Bob Logan, director, Dialogic Media Labs, is speaking during “The Mobile Video Revolution.” Don’t wait. Register now.
