VoIP: A Dead Industry?

TMCnet Editor

As a result of the tough economic times, the rollout of VoIP to carriers has slowed in some cases and sped up in others.  And while there are some industry experts saying the future of VoIP is a tossup in the telecom industry, others still hold out hope.

At ITEXPO West’s session, “Is VoIP Dead? Where do we Stand?” on Thursday, September 3 at 8:30 a.m., industry experts will touch on the reality of VoIP in today’s marketplace.

Dialogic Corp.’s James Rafferty (News - Alert), product line director, Integrated Media Getaways, will answer these three questioning honing in on the telecom industry:
-  Have carriers stopped the migration from TDM to IP infrastructure?
-  What are new use cases driving new VoIP rollouts?
-  Is VoIP beginning to show up in the wireless world?

Rafferty will be joined by Deloitte (News - Alert) Financial Advisory Services LLP, NGN IMS Forum and Vitelity executives who will also lend advice to this current dilemma.

“Anybody who wants an update on Voice over IP should attend,” Rafferty told TMC (News - Alert) CEO Rich Tehrani in a recent interview. “This could include attendees from enterprises and service providers as well as the vendor community, plus press and analysts.”

With some frightening headlines about the telecom industry arising during the economic downturn, Raffery will highlight specific instances and note news items on the upside that may have been lost in the media shuffle.

“I’ll review some of the exciting new applications and approaches we are seeing as customers continue their progress toward adapting IP-based technologies for voice networks and solutions,” said Raffery.

In speaking about the current economic crisis, and how it has changed Dialogic’s (News - Alert) customers, Raffery said that he’s once again reminded that progress is not always in a straight line, even for a growth market like VoIP.

“Our customers have continued to work closely with us, but are carefully assessing the launch of new projects based on opportunities to either reduce costs or provide new revenue generating services,” said Rafferty, who will address this issue further in the session.

At Dialogic, a multimedia and signaling technologies and platforms provider, Rafferty is responsible for VoIP Gateway (News - Alert) products sold to carriers and related market strategies. He has been active in the standards process through his work with the Internet Engineering Task Force and the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).
