Earlier this year, officials from market research firm In-Stat (News - Alert) reported that businesses are turning toward IP-based phone systems at far higher rates than residents – calling for 31 million voice-focused business IP phones to ship by 2012.

 

The trend – despite Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro Group’s prediction that IP lines for the PBX market will decline in 2009 – signals the wider uptake of VoIP-based communications in the office. Even in its grim prediction for IP lines, Dell’Oro concedes that VoIP penetration will continue to grow this year.

 

As any IP telephony veteran will tell you, VoIP itself forms the backbone of what’s generally called “unified communications” – a cost-saving, future-proofed, scalable system that can include any or all of the following: fixed and mobile voice, e-mail, instant messaging, desktop and advanced business applications, IP-PBX (News - Alert), VoIP, telepresence, voicemail, audio video and Web conferencing.
