Dialogic Talks Mobile Video, Looks Back at '08
Assignment Desk Editor
Dialogic, a provider of open systems platforms to both the Enterprise and Service Provider markets, officially acquired the communications platforms division of NMS Communications Corporation, a provider of applications, platforms and technologies that make possible the rapid creation and deployment of a broad range of value-added services, from voice mail to IVR to ringback and mobile TV.
Applications like mobile video have taken off in the market and show no signs of slowing. With the acquisition, Dialogic (News - Alert) can leverage NMS' expertise in mobile and other technologies.
TMC President Rich Tehrani (News - Alert) quoted Nick Jensen, the President and CEO of Dialogic as saying at the company's Dialogic One Event that, "video is the new voice and will be a huge platform going forward."
At the event, Jensen also detailed an example project "take over" that involved company "X and Y" and the ability to record and file a conversation and instantaneously call up the results of the conference call with full recordings and screen shares as needed. To find out more about the company and its future plans, I took some time to chat with Jim Machi, Sr. VP of Marketing.
Looking back at 2008, how would you characterize the year for your company?
2008 was the year of the mobile video application development. We saw our partners developing many interesting applications, ranging from video portal access (IVVR) from a mobile device, to video SMS, to a motion detector on a camera causing a phone call to a mobile video enabled phone so the recipient of the call could see what triggered the motion detection - all very innovative applications.
What were the key trends that impacted your business?
Dialogic has customers in both the enterprise and service provider solution segments.
Within the service provider segment, customers offering Mobile Value Added Services such as CRBT, Debit-Card, Location Based Services are looking to add video. Why?
Because as 3G networks build out, and as 3G (and video enabled) phones are deployed, it’s natural that the consumers will want to take advantage of the video capabilities. Not just of the video phones, but also interacting with the Internet and the video from the Internet.
What was your company’s biggest achievement in the past year? We released several video technology enabling platforms and we also completed the acquisition of both the NMS Communications Platform business, which was focused on providing technology enabling for the mobile value added services market segment, and of Open Media Labs, which was working on lower level video algorithms. Both of these acquisitions strengthen our video technology enabling offerings to the market.
What are your customers looking for in the coming year? First, in this economy, they are looking for stability from a supplier. As the market leader in the technology enabling market segment, we provide that. And customers continue to look for IP-enablement solutions from us so they can continue their solution migration to IP environments. From a mobile video perspective, customers are interested in us continuing to innovate into new areas.
Do you think a new administration in Washington, D.C. will be good for the communications industry? If so, how? If not, why not? Yes, I do. The incoming administration seems to be much more technology savvy than any prior administration so that in it will provide a boost. I am hopeful also that the administration will look at the communications industry as an avenue of national growth.
If you had to make one bold prediction for 2009, what would it be?
I think last year I said the Giants would win the Super Bowl and no one believed me. I think it’s the Mets year in 2009 though.
