Mobile Video Applications Today Drive Communications for Tomorrow

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Anyone who ever assumed we would never need video while on the go is likely to have missed a significant opportunity in this market. With both consumers and professionals becoming increasingly mobile as of late, the demand for solutions that can accompany them on the way has increased tremendously.

With mobile being one of those solutions in high demand, consumers are offered a variety of Multimedia Messaging Service solutions to choose from when turning to NMS Communications and their offerings. This includes, Multimedia Content Browsing, Handset-to-Handset Video and Extended Video Calling.

By presenting a logical extension of the currently available Short Message Service (SMS) offering, Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) allows the reception of full multimedia messages by a compatible wireless handset. The device does not need an embedded camera. Instead, it only needs to be able to display images or video stream.

A typical Multimedia Content Browsing/Delivery configuration can include a variety of different channels to be sure there is an option that fits every lifestyle or business need. The applications that NMS focuses on include those for personal entertainment and information services.

Standard TV program viewing provides for rapid scanning of channels to effectively provide casual entertainment in a mobile setting. Users can view sportscasts or information channels, such as news and weather channels, to receive the information needed visually.

NMS also offers video recording features to allow for local media storage in the video gateway that can be dedicated to a given subscriber. In addition, the success of gaming has proven that mobile users want to purchase interactive video games to play on their video handsets. Local gateway storage for each subscriber could include support for other interactive programs.

Interactive TV can be optimized by using the interaction channel to support complete Web browsing. NMS expects that those individual services more tailored to the interactive TV environment are more likely to become best-selling applications.

Handset-to-Handset video features a wireless device with a built-in camera and the ability to send and receive still or moving images across the network. Similar to PC-to-PC webcam capabilities, this latest innovation offers the advantages of mobility as the handset can operate much like a video camera.

Finally, extended video calling offers the ability to communicate in a multimedia session with any peer-to-peer device, such as a PDA, desktop computer or other video enabled device. This feature has the potential to be popular with the most dynamic market segments, while also offering business applications to ensure the system is highly desirable.
