Next-Gen Networks Make Mobile Video Calling a Reality: ITEXPO West Interview

TMCnet Contributor

The advent of next-generation networks – along with the influx of smartphones, tablets and other Web-enabled devices – has helped take mobile video calling applications from niche products to mainstream offerings within the last year or two.

As expected, the explosion of mobile video applications was a major topic of discussion at ITEXPO (News - Alert) West 2011, which wrapped up last month in Austin, Texas. While at the show, TMC group editorial director Erik Linask sat down Jim Machi, SVP of marketing at Dialogic, to talk about the mobile video market and how his company is helping to enable video calling applications.

Machi said that Dialogic (News - Alert) recently enhanced its power media server to enable open standards for video calling over any kind of SIP network. This has made it possible for Dialogic partners to build SIP calling applications for desktop and mobile phones, including Android (News - Alert) and iOS handsets.

As an example, Dialogic recently partnered with a company called VoIP Switch, which leverages the Dialogic media server to enable a SIP client that can be downloaded from the iTunes Store.

"Most of the systems right now are all proprietary and closed," said Machi. "Dialogic is all about open. We are really looking forward to our partners bringing out some really good video conferencing solutions that aren't just for the office."

Machi gave a few examples of various mobile video calling applications that Dialogic partners are bringing to market – innovations that he believes are changing the face of communications.

Dialogic also used ITEXPO West 2011 as a venue to pre-launch a website feature that Machi feels will help current and perspective partners and clients better understand what solutions the company can help enable.

The new page, dubbed the Solutions Showcase, highlights all the top products and services that are available through Dialogic partners. The showcase allows service providers and enterprise customers to explore proven revenue generating solutions that can be deployed quickly and easily.

"You can see what you can buy from our partners or from us," Machi told Linask. "It will ease the whole go-to-market model within our ecosystem."
